I’m used to playing Frisbee and ball with my lively Border Collie, Roy.

He loves to run and jump, to catch and bounce about (actually he’s a very bouncy dog in general)!

He’s still quite young at the moment and I am mindful that one day he, like many other dogs, may experience some of the health problems associated with doggy old age.

My friend, Beth has a beloved four-legged friend called Indie – a large and rather friendly Rottweiler. Indie has a great temperament and enjoys his trips to the park, but he suffers from joint problems. 🙁

What Joint Problems do Dogs Experience?

Rottweilers can be prone to problems with their joints and Indie has had problems with arthritis for some time. Beth does what she can to make life comfortable for him.

**Obligatory Veterinarian Reminder** It’s important to consult a vet if you feel your pet is suffering from any health issue or ailment. They can best advise you on treatment and how to look after your dog.

Unfortunately, Indie the Rottweiler is not alone in suffering from joint issues. All dog breeds can experience problems, this can be a hereditary trait or due to your pet being very active -in which case joint problems come about simply via wear and tear.

Here are a few of the most common issues related to joint problems amongst dogs:

1. Osteoarthritis / Degenerative Joint Disease

This is a health problem which can be caused by aging of the joints, your doggy enjoying too much food and carrying a little bit too much weight, injury or it can be a genetic problem. Osteoarthritis can strike at any time and as your dog ages it can become more of problem.

No cure has been found as of yet, but there is treatment available that should offer some relief regarding symptoms.

2. Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries (ACL Injuries)

Dogs that tend to be on the go quite a lot or have experienced injury tend to experience this joint issue e.g. Golden Retrievers, but it can be an issue for overweight dogs too.

Treatment is usually by way of medication or surgery (if the case requires it).

3. Elbow and Hip Dysplasia

Both of these health problems are usually hereditary (caused by problems relating to joint growth) and are most commonly associated with larger breeds.

Great Danes and St Bernard often suffer from hip dysplasia whilst Rottweilers and German Shepherds can be affected by elbow dysplasia.

Surgery is a usual method of treating dysplasia.

4. Patellar Luxation

At the other end of the scale Patellar Luxation is a health issue more commonly found in small dog breeds e.g. Chihuahuas and Pekingese.

Patellar Luxation involves the dislocation of the kneecap – it sounds awfully painful but generally only acute conditions require treatment (usually surgery).

What are the Dietary Needs of a Dog with Joint Problems?

One of the simplest ways to help a dog that has joint problems is to review their diet.

A healthy dog is more apt at fighting health problems and coping with the aging process. A balanced diet of natural ingredients can bolster the immune system – providing important vitamins and nutrients for overall health and the strengthening of joints.

Weight plays a part here too – too much can put unnecessary stress on your dog – making joint problems worse.

A healthy diet can help to keep your dog’s weight at the right levels.

There are certain ingredients it may be worth seeking out when exploring dog food options. The presence of high levels of chondroitin and glucosamine indicate that the food is great for pooches who suffer from joint problems.

Fish oils are also seen to have properties which can aid health – helping to lessen painful inflammation and giving mobility a protective boost.

Best Dog Food for Joint Health

A dog experiencing joint problems requires a well-balanced and nutritious food that can boost overall health and well-being.

Look out for food containing joint strengtheners glucosamine and chondroitin, along with fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids (great for mobility).

Antioxidants help to improve the immune systems so are considered a healthy add in too.

Check for top quality ingredients like whole animal products (chicken, lamb etc.) and plenty of goodies like protein, fiber, carbs, along with a range of minerals and vitamins for optimum health.

Try and steer clear of by-products (a mix up of all sorts of things) and fillers that are designed to bulk out food but offer zero nutrients.
