I know, I know…if you are anything like I was, your first thought is:

Now why in the world would I want to buy organic dog food when there are so many other brands out there?

Well, I’m going to try to break that down for you today.

…As well as answer a few other questions that might be looming around about this fast-growing pet food craze.

What IS Organic Dog Food?

Quite literally, organic dog food is any mix that meets the guidelines by which human food is deemed organic.

In that respect, at least 95% of the ingredients must be grown without pesticides or fertilizers that can make its way into the food.

However, there are some different criteria that make for different labeling, and that can get pretty confusing unless you know how to break it down.

Read your dog food labels!

This is where, as Grandmother always said, the proof is in the pudding.

If the ingredients pass the 95% rule as above, the label may read “USDA Organic”. The fact that vitamins and minerals are added to pet food keeps it from attaining a 100% mark in labeling because there are no guidelines in that field in the matter of organic processing.

If the pet food company uses roughly 70% organic ingredients, the label may then read, “Made with organic ingredients”. So those are your major, most easily found differences in the label reading process.

Is Organic Food Actually Better for My Pet than Other Dog Foods?

Some people might decide to choose a dog food with a label that reads “natural” or “holistic” over the USDA Organic labeling.

Those words carry some weight in the world of people food, but when it comes to our fur babies, the guidelines are not quite the same. While we think of the wonderful connotations associated with natural ingredients, the fact is that as long as something is, in fact, natural, that doesn’t mean we want it in our pet’s food.

There is an extensive list of naturally occurring poisons in the world we live in but, while it may be true that they are as natural as salt from a salt mine, we certainly don’t want our pets ingesting them.

I am in no way saying that some pet food companies lace their product with poison!

The point is that the word “natural” may be used if the ingredient is natural. There is no tried and true rule as to how beneficial it has to be.

On the other hand, carrying the USDA label of organic means that the ingredients have met a list of procedural safeguards already set in place, and there is more solace in that fact alone.

Beyond all that is the fact that organic foods – for people and pets alike – are incredibly beneficial to the system, much more so than premium blends or those that are filled with grains, preservatives and other ingredients we can barely pronounce.

Organic foods are:

  • It is easier to digest
  • Less chance for allergies
  • Less health disorders that can stem for chemical and preservative use
  • Medicinal benefits, such as optimizing joint health and boost the immune system.

What it all boils down to…

Okay, so maybe you’re still not completely sold. That’s okay, the fact that you’re here says a lot for how important your dog’s food is to you.

Along that line of thinking, if you have children, think about what you feed them. Do ingredients matter? Do you try to avoid fillers, preservatives, and artificial flavors and colors? Are natural, nutritional ingredients important to you?

If you’re finicky about the food your children eat, then it is absolutely okay to be just as finicky about your pet’s food as well. Anyone who says, “it’s just a dog” in regards to what the pet eats might not consider that pet part of the family.

But if you do, please read on and discover some foods that could fit the bill perfectly if you’re considering the switch.

Now we’ll look at some specific foods that you need to check out for yourself and your pet…

1. Castor & Pollux Organix

Organix dry dog food is made by Castor & Pollux and is certified organic by Oregon Tilth. It is completely grain free, made in the USA and advertises on the package that it is made in an organically certified kitchen.

The ingredient list is pretty impressive, with real chicken listed as the first ingredient, and it also includes omega 3’s as well as glucosamine and chondroitin for great joint benefits.

They have a full line of products including both dry and wet food, snacks and treats, and their reviews are no less than 4 stars, both on their product website as well as Amazon.

Reviewers all seemed to enjoy how much their dogs loved the taste of the food, but others went on to further describe how much better the food is for their pets’ health needs.

One stated that her Pomeranian had bad issues with her teeth, but Organix helped with that. Another stated that even though their family’s German Shepherd was a finicky eater, he absolutely loved Organix.

Another reviewer mentioned that her dog has an Ocular Autoimmune disorder, and this food has helped immensely.

2. Newman’s Own Organics

Newman’s Own Organics is a lesser-known dog food, but fits the bill quite well in this category.

The canned dog food seems to be the most organic, with 95% organic ingredients, while their dry dog food weighs in with 70% organic ingredients.

This food also contains probiotics as well as antioxidants and is said to be cooked at a low enough temperature so that the natural nutritive properties of the ingredients are not diminished.

With a 4.3 star rating on Amazon, customers have made it known that they have done quite a bit of research on their own to be able to say that this is one of the best organic dog foods on the market.

There does seem to be some concern with the beef and liver variety, but the chicken and brown rice recipe does tend to steal the show.

As an added bonus, Newman’s Own states that the company focuses its charitable giving to animal shelters and other animal related services.

Next, we find a little gem called Natural Planet Organics from Tuffy’s Pet Foods.

They are proudly backed by Oregon Tilth and their product list includes organic, non-GMO, grain-free ingredients.

The history of the company dates back to 1947 in Minnesota.

The company prides itself on some of the finest ingredients to be found in dog food.

Reviews for Natural Planet Organics got a solid 4.8 stars on Amazon and the testimonials on the product page absolutely rave about it.

One reviewer stated that she was mixing Natural Planet with the old kibble her dog had been eating, as directed by vets, but her dog immediately picked out and at the Natural Planet, leaving the old food untouched. I guess that fur baby had decided to go all out right away.

Nothing beats reviewer’s stories to let you know some of the behind-the-scenes information on how a particular food might or might not be best for your pets needs. At this point, there isn’t a great deal of scientific research into that field, so we – as pet owners – need that kind of feedback, especially if we just can’t seem to decide on which product we’d like to try.

As far as price is concerned, of the three we’ve outlined here, they all seem to be roughly in the same price range, give or take a couple of dollars.

Reviewers across the board stated that it was worth the extra money for the benefits to their dogs’ health and enjoyment, especially if the pet happens to be older.

Sometimes an ongoing routine of great nutrition is far cheaper than a vet bill later in life if poor nutrition has taken a toll!
