There are many reasons why dog parents may choose to feed their pets fish-based food over traditional, meat-based foods.

Perhaps your dog has allergies or sensitivities, as many dogs do, and can’t stomach most meats?

Perhaps you don’t eat meat yourself, and you would like to do your part to lower the environmental impact of farm-raised animals by cutting it out of your pet’s diet as much as possible?

Or, maybe, you perceive fish as being a healthy alternative, and just wish to provide your dog with the healthiest food options possible.

Whatever the reason, as a responsible and loving pet owner, you have decided to look deeper into the benefits and drawbacks of a fish-based diet.

The main advantage of salmon is that it’s incredibly high in digestible protein. When looking at the biological value of a food, the available amino acids are measured, and a figure is given that weighs the level of protein availability.

Fish meal has a much higher protein content than chicken meal or beef meal.  Fish-based diets are often a good choice for dogs that have digestive issues, for just this reason.

Amino acids are necessary for long term health and wellness, and a deficiency in amino acids may result in a range of health issues, including lowered immune systems, poor cognitive function, and issues with their skin and coats.

Often, an animal that has skin issues may benefit from the addition of fish into its diet.

While omega fatty acids are essential to your dog’s health, there are other considerations that must be taken, prior to choosing a completely fish-based diet for your pup.

Just as we are conscious with what we put into our own bodies, we must keep environmental factors like mercury levels at the forefront of our thoughts when considering fish based foods.

Thankfully, even though a fish-based food may be marketed with the name “salmon” in it, there are almost certainly secondary and tertiary fish sources, such as herring, sardines and jack mackerel, which are less likely to contain heavy metals than salmon or tuna.

Often, foods that are labeled as “salmon flavored” or “fish formula” will still contain other protein sources (chicken and beef being the main ones) – which is actually preferable (as long as you’re not trying to avoid an allergen), as additional protein sources will provide more nutritional balance in a recipe.

If you are trying to avoid a certain protein, make sure to read the ingredient list carefully.

The Best Salmon Dog Food Brands

As with any major dietary consideration, it’s best to go over all options with your vet, prior to changing your dog’s food. To get you started, I’ve compiled a list of the top-ranking Salmon based dog foods for you:

1. Wellness Core Ocean Formula

This food is naturally preserved, which is extremely rare in dog foods, and even more so in fish based foods. The ingredients list is thoughtful and well balanced, and completely grain free.

Reviews from every source are all exceptionally positive, with flavor and health benefits being the most mentioned reasons.

Top 5 Ingredients:

  1. Whitefish
  2. Herring Meal
  3. Salmon Meal
  4. Menhaden Fish Meal
  5. Peas

2. Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream with Smoked Salmon

Aside from being the only product on this list to specify using wild salmon (a benefit not only to the health of your dog but to environmental sustainability in general), this grain-free dog food is incredibly high in protein and relatively low in carbs.

The inclusion of fresh fruit and vegetables is a plus. If you’re a pescetarian, trying to cut animal product from your dog’s diet, this is a wonderful option as the only protein source in this food is from fish.

Top 5 Ingredients:

  1. Salmon
  2. Ocean fish meal
  3. Sweet potatoes
  4. Potatoes
  5. Canola oil (boo!)

3. Holistic Select Natural Anchovy, Sardine, & Salmon

This food is the only one on this list that makes mention of other fish sources used besides salmon, even though all the brands listed do use additional sources. I’m happy to see a variety of fruit and veg on the ingredients list, as well as highly digestible, non-wheat grain sources. This is an excellent option, at a mid-level cost.

Top 5 Ingredients:

  1. Anchovy & Sardine Meal
  2. Oatmeal
  3. Ground Brown Rice
  4. Ground White Rice
  5. Salmon Meal

4. Halo Spot’s Stew Succulent Salmon Recipe

This particular food has excellent ingredients, including egg and vegetables and fruits, with salmon as its first ingredient.

While there are quite a few chicken based ingredients in the food, this is a good option if you’re trying to give your dog a high quality, tasty salmon based food.

First 5 Ingredients:

  1. Salmon
  2. Eggs
  3. Pea Protein
  4. Oats
  5. Vegetable Broth

5. Purina Sensitive Skin and Stomach Adult Salmon Food

Salmon is the main ingredient in this food, although it’s fairly grain heavy. Granted, the grains are all fairly digestible, I find it a bold move by Purina (owned by Nestle) to make claims that this is a viable option for sensitive stomachs.

Furthermore, there are undisclosed protein sources listed within the ingredients list (“animal fat” is a generic term used when a company doesn’t want to specify what the animal source is).

This food is well priced, which may be a selling point to quite a few pet owners just dipping their toes into the dog dietary health world. If you’ve never fed your dog a fish-based food before, this may be a good starting point, simply to avoid buying a more expensive food that they could potentially hate.

However, we there are quite a few better food options on this list that you may want to consider instead.

First 5 Ingredients:

  1. Salmon
  2. Canola meal
  3. Brewers rice
  4. Barley
  5. Oatmeal
