My Border Collie, Roy, is still a youthful dog. He’s bouncy and lively and keeps me on my toes. I am hoping he will be with my family and I for many years to come and understand that as he matures he may have different requirements.

Roy and I meet a variety of dogs (and their loyal owners) at our local park and not too long ago we met Saskia and her beloved pet, Danny the Beagle, who at age 9, is considered to be in his twilight years.

What are the Characteristics of a Senior Dog?

Saskia and Danny have been together since he was a pup and have been through lots together, Saskia had nursed Danny through a condition called Cherry Eye (Beagle’s are susceptible to it) and he, in turn, provided comfort and companionship when her partner sadly passed away.

Understandably Saskia is very keen to ensure Danny’s old age be as healthy and comfortable as possible.

Just like humans, dogs also start to feel the effects of aging as time passes.

You may find your four-legged friend begins to experience a decrease in the sharpness of their senses (hearing and sight may become impaired).

They may develop problems relating to internal organs such as the heart. Mobility-wise they might become less agile and slow down a little (don’t we all as we get older)?

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance covers everything that matters including injuries, illnesses, genetic conditions, and emergency care. But, as the old adage goes, there’s life in the old dog yet and we owe it to our faithful friends to make their sunset years some of their best.

What are the Dietary Needs of a Senior Dog?

If your dog has started to slow down a little in his senior years he will need to consume less calories, if he’s moving less he will burn less.

Don’t let old age be blighted by the bloat – keep your pet healthy and happy by feeding him the right amount.

We have touched on mobility issues, maintaining a healthy weight can help with movement and regular exercise is imperative still.  Nutrition and a well-balanced diet is also important, especially as the immune system may not be quite what it was.

A reduced level of immunity can lead to increased risk in terms of heart problems, diabetes, arthritis etc.

During their senior years, the dietary needs of your dog will be partly determined by his or her health issues. Veterinarians are able to offer advice on the health status of your precious pet and can offer guidance on how best to meet their dietary needs.

Our Top 4 Picks for Best Wet Food for Senior Dogs

Your senior dog needs to maintain their health and well-being, be aware of calorific food if your old friend is overweight or less active.

To keep joints healthy its worth considering dog food containing glucosamine and chondroitin, whilst omega-3 fatty acids is thought to aid mobility and the healing process.

Antioxidants are also considered a healthy benefit and are credited with enhancing the immune system.

You should be seeking a natural and nutritious product, with a short and high-quality list of ingredient, containing protein, carbohydrates, fiber and vitamins and minerals.

Look out for whole animal food products that you recognize (like chicken and beef).

Avoid cheap fillers, by-products (like corn) and lots of artificial preservatives and flavorings. For more information on dog food check out Dog Food Insider.

Conclusion: Which Wet Dog Food Is Best for Senior Dogs?

The four examples listed are all great for your senior dog, but they do have unique differences that will apply more to some mature canines than others.

Danny the Beagle is currently enjoying Canidae Life Stages Platinum Senior & Overweight – Chicken, lamb & fish formula. Owner Saskia tells me that Danny is not quite as active as he once was and she worries a little about him getting a little portly.

He happily chomps down this food and his tail wags appreciatively on it being served. Saskia was drawn to this product as not only does it help dogs to maintain a healthy weight but it’s specifically formulated for senior dogs. Saskia has no plans currently to change Danny’s food, but in the future, she could look at alternative brand

Wellness Complete Health Natural Wet Canned Dog Food. This is another dog food specifically aimed at meeting the needs of senior dogs and again looks at providing more nutrients and less calories.

If you have an older dog that prefers nice soft and moist food it might be worth taking a look at NUTRO Ultra Senior Holistic Superfoodwet dog food. This also has the added benefit of good quality ingredients.

Finally, there’s Blue Buffalo Freedom Grain Free Wet Senior Dog Food, which is a good choice if your faithful friend suffers from a more delicate tummy – grain free dog food tends to be more gentle on the digestive system.

Make Sure YOUR Voice (or Bark) is Heard!

Danny the Beagle is fortunately a happy and healthy doggy and is quite content for now with the dog food chosen for him by owner Saskia. If Saskia decided to try something new she would find a myriad of information out there relating to dog food brands.

However, no amount of research can substitute for the views and opinions of you as senior dog owners.

We want to know what you think!

The Nutro Ultra was an excellent choice for our senior Shih-tzu until they changed the ingredients recently, now we are having to do research to find her another wet food because it has given her the pouring diarrhea. No more Ultra for us.

    • Hi Shannon, thanks for writing in, but mostly thanks for writing the words “pouring diarrhea”!

How is your Tzu – I hope the pouring-ness is long gone by now and you can laugh about it? Would love to hear an update if you’ve found a replacement you can recommend.

  2. I am determined to avoid dog foods that contain carrageenan, which should not be used in dog food or our food. Perhaps the amounts present in dog food are small, but I still don’t want it.
