Cheap No Grain Dog Food (or How to Go Grain Free Without Breaking the Bank)…Recently, I adopted a one year old beagle mix named Taco and I quickly learned about the pressures of being a good dog parent.
It can be challenging to keep up with the trends and diets people are saying are best for your dog and following those trends can be expensive.
One of the most prevalent diet trends for dogs is grain-free.
While not every dog needs to be on a grain free diet, some will truly benefit from it.
If your dog, like Taco, does better on a grain free diet for whatever reason, never fear! I’ve found five great options that won’t cost a fortune.
What is Grain Free Dog Food Anyway?
Grains, or cereals, are seeds of grasses like:
Something that advertises using “whole grains” are products that use the entire grain seed instead of some products that process the grain.
A grain free product wouldn’t contain any of the aforementioned grains but that does not necessarily mean it is carbohydrate free.
Many grain free foods use potatoes and other vegetables as a substitute for grains maintaining carbohydrate levels.
Does My Dog’s Food Need to be Grain Free?
Many vets suggest avoiding corn, cornmeal and wheat as they can be common allergens.
Also, some dogs may need to be on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet but not every dog needs a grain free diet.
Experts all agree that the first thing you should do before considering a change in your dog’s diet is to consult your vet.
Wet or Dry Grain Free Dog Food?
Grain free options can be found in both wet and dry food products.
While using wet or dry food is typically just a preference for you and your dog, to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to grain free I recommend going dry.
Dry food comes in larger packages and typically has a lower price per ounce than wet food.
