We’ve all been there:

Standing in the kibble aisle of a grocery store or pet food chain, dozens of choices in brightly colored bags (each with a compelling marketing pitch) turn what should be an easy choice…into a daunting one.

Maybe you’ve tried a few brands before with less than stellar results from your canine companion, with issues ranging from a sensitive stomach to a finicky eater.

While not all dog food is created equal, there is no single brand that works for every dog.

I’m here to help point the way to what I consider to be the dog food with the most protein.

Why is Dog Food Protein Content Important?

Although dogs are not obligate carnivores (like cats) and can survive on more plant-based proteins, dogs ultimately thrive on a higher protein, meat-based diet.

There are some myths out there that suggest a higher protein diet will make them hyper, or give them kidney trouble, or shouldn’t be fed to older dogs, but none are true.

The hyper, spastic behavior you see in your dogs of all sizes and ages are usually due to higher levels of simple carbohydrates and fillers often found in lower quality dog foods.

These filler foods are also often linked to obesity, and high blood sugar.

(Top 3) Highest Protein Dog Food on the Market…

If a raw dog food diet is not for you (or your dog), but you’d still like to max out your dog’s protein intake as nature intended, you’ll find the top three high protein dry dog food kibbles listed below.

1. Wysong Epigen

Check Price

First 5 Ingredients:

  1. Organic chicken
  2. Chicken meal
  3. Turkey meal
  4. Potato protein
  5. Meat protein isolate

Wysong Epigen boasts a whopping 63% protein content!

This is the first dog food I’ve seen without the use of starches, like potatoes and peas, which usually replace the grains in grain free dog food.

It’s also the first I’ve seen with organic ingredients.

Some brands use plant-based proteins to increase their overall protein content, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here…it’s all meat all day for Wysong!

2. Evo

First 5 Ingredients:

  1. Turkey
  2. Chicken
  3. Chicken meal
  4. Salmon meal
  5. Menhaden meal

In this review, we are using Evo Turkey & Chicken.

This particular flavor has a 42% protein content.

Like Wysong, Evo dog food is free of grains and potatoes, but they do include some carbohydrates like peas and tapioca.

3. Solid Gold

Check Price

First 5 Ingredients:

  1. Ocean fish meal
  2. Beef
  3. Pea protein
  4. Potatoes
  5. Canola oil

In our last review, we are going over Solid Gold’s Barking at the Moon recipe, as it seems to have the highest protein content of all their recipes.

It has a 41% protein content and while it is the lowest on our list, it is still nothing to sneeze at!

Ocean fish meal, beef, pea protein, potatoes, and canola oil make up the first five ingredients, making it the food with the highest amount of plant-based proteins as well.

Be sure to read up on this type of protein if you’re unfamiliar with plant-based proteins.

However, it is still a grain-free dog food, it is just more carbohydrate heavy than the others.

Overall, what brand you choose shouldn’t be based on things like price, popularity, or even how many stars the dog food gets on fancy review sites.

Those big names on TV are usually far from the best, they just have the best budget in advertisement.

Only you (and your dog!) can decide what food caters best to the individual needs of your unique canine companion, so don’t be afraid to get out there and try a few brands!

Your dog will thank you for it.
