Like you, we wondered what puppy food is best for small breeds – so we tested the puppy food market and the winners are…
Impatient (like me)? 🙂
Jump directly to current pricing & more information about our answers to “What puppy food is best for small breeds?”:
Puppies grow a whopping 20X faster than adult dogs, so they have appetites larger than themselves.
They’re also probably a little bit impatient, which can cause us to make a rushed decision when choosing
Not to mention, being choosy sounds like a lot of work because finding the right dog food for your new pup can be confusing.
Perhaps even a tad bit overwhelming?
It’s not like there are 1 or 2 products on the shelf. Analysis paralysis, much?
Luckily, we have an easy guide to help you pick out the perfect food for your energetic, peppy, and borderline A-N-G-R-Y puppy.
What to Look for in Puppy Food
The best puppy foods have whole, healthy ingredients to ensure the health and growth of your new pup. An easy way to ensure quality puppy food is to read the ingredient list.
The first ingredient should be whole animal products, like chicken or fish.
Then, make sure that the grains are whole grains, like oats, rice, or buckwheat.
Natural fats and oils are also important for your puppy’s energy levels, coat, and muscles. In good quality foods, these will come from plant and animal sources instead of manufactured by-products.
Lastly, ensure the vitamins A, C, E, B-complex, calcium, phosphorus, Omega 3, and Omega 6 fatty acids are all included your puppy’s chow.
Unfortunately, some dog food comes with filler ingredients that do more harm than good to your dog.
Look out for ingredients like meat by-products (or “meal” as they are often listed as) as these are many times the kidneys and lungs of animals that are unfit for human consumption
Cheap grain fillers such as corn and wheat can be bad for your dog as they include little nutrients, but a lot of carbs, and they can be rough on the tummy.
Just like we should stay away from corn syrup, your puppy should too. Corn syrup can lead to illnesses like obesity and diabetes.
Finally, it’s a good rule of thumb to stay away from chemicals such as growth hormones, artificial flavoring, artificial coloring, and preservatives to make sure your puppy is only eating the best ingredients.
What Puppy Food is Best for Small Breeds?
We were wondering too, so we did some research (with our eyes, our brains, and with our puppies) and came up with 4 puppy foods (that we consider to be the best) for you and your small breed pup’s consideration.
1. Wellness Complete Heath Natural Dry Dog Food
This puppy food is highly rated (and for good reason).
The first three ingredients listed are:
We learned in the guide above that the first ingredient should be a whole animal product (and not by-products or “meal”), so Wellness went above and beyond.
The grains are oatmeal, barley, and brown rice, all of which are whole grains and nice to your puppy’s sensitive tummy.
Vegetables and fruits are also high on the list of ingredients, so we know that the bulk of the food is coming from good, healthy sources.
This puppy food also contains essential vitamins and minerals. Almost all the ingredients are sourced from the US and Canada, only 5% are from other countries.
You can buy this food on Amazon for $29.98 for a 12lb bag (link provided below). On the same Amazon page as this product, Wellness provides a comparative chart for nutritional content between all their feeds as well as a diagram on how to transition your puppy to eating Wellness dog food.
2. Natural Balance Whole Body Health Dry Puppy Formula
We love that this Natural Balance kibble is small enough for your pup’s small mouth and has a hole in the middle to prevent choking.
The first ingredient is chicken which is a whole animal product. The other sources of protein are from peas, duck meal, and eggs.
This formula includes all the amino acids, vitamins, and minerals your puppy needs.
One downside of this food is that all the vegetables and fruits are listed last, which mean that they are the least prevalent in the food. However, custom ratings are high for this food, especially with picky eating dog owners.
3. Organix Puppy Dry Dog Food
This is another highly rated puppy food that is loved by customers. One of the great things about this food is that there are no added hormones or antibiotics.
All ingredients are made and processed in the USA and they are all organic. It has whole meats, mostly chicken, and whole grains like barley and brown rice.
This food also has essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Customers are very satisfied with this food, as shown in the Amazon comments.
Organix is on the pricey side of puppy food, but the ingredients are worth the cost.
4. Blue Buffalo BLUE Life Protection Formula Small Breed Puppy Recipe (Chicken & Oatmeal)
Our final recommendation is this dog food because it’s main ingredients, chicken and oatmeal, are soft on your puppy’s tummy while still being nutritious.
The small kibbles are high nutritional content with the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids your puppy needs.
This is a well rounded and highly liked dog food perfect for a new small puppy, but it comes with a price, as it is the most costly of all of the 4 we recommend.
We hope that the first food your try is a success, but if it is not, do not panic.
Try, try, try again – for your pup’s sake!
Puppies can be picky eaters so you may need to try a few foods to see which one your dog likes the most and feels the after eating.
The most important thing is to read those labels!
Flashy bags with words like “natural” may catch your eye, but make sure you always look to see if there are wholesome ingredients to fuel your puppy.
Good luck and let us know in the comments about your favorite puppy food or any that we missed!
